This time when she woke, Valeria was certain she would find herself staring through a bloody visor into a field of wandering rocks. Her brain registered the pain in her body as if it was newly acquired. The constricting pressure around her ribs and left arm left no doubt that it was because of the holo-chart console pinning her to the window.

Instead, she was once more in the strange, rounded room she now remembered belonged to the captain of yet another Vekriel warship, this one on the other side of the clan war.

At least she had clothes on. That was an improvement, but it also brought images of the state of the Killian’s Pride when she’d been escorted aboard to find them. That reminded her that she hadn’t seen her crew yet. How long had they been here? Were they being well cared for? How could she, as their captain, not know these things already?

She used the anger those thoughts had surging to get up out of bed and make her way to the door. This time when she opened it, two guards were standing outside.

“I want to see my crew,” she said without preamble. “Now.”

She tried to squeeze past them but was halted when one gently pushed her back inside and closed the door engaging the lock.

“Am I a prisoner now?” she shouted. “Because, trust me, keeping me captive is the last thing you want to do. When that door opens again, somebody is going to pay!”

“I’m sorry,” a voice came through the intercom. “We’re under strict orders to keep you here until Captain Aedyn arrives to escort you to the medical bay. He also said to make sure that how we keep you here doesn’t result in further injury. The door is only locked until the captain arrives. He’s on his way now.”

“Do you honestly think that having the door unlocked while I was unconscious makes me think better of you for locking it now?” she asked. “Is that supposed to imply that being free to come and go when I’m asleep but not when I’m awake makes us friends?”

“Captain Aedyn will be here shortly,” the guard said. “You should rest until he arrives.”

The light on the intercom went dark, making any more words on her part useless. She glared at it, tightening her free hand into a fist and muttering threats in the six languages she knew, even though she was the only one who could hear them. When she ran out, she stomped over to the console chair and sat down. She pondered the keyboard and the dark screen for a moment, then started flipping every switch and pressing any buttons she could find.

“It’s locked out,” a familiar voice said when the door slid open a few minutes later. “Even if it wasn’t, you wouldn’t find much use for it as I didn’t hear any Vekriel oaths mixed into that very colorful description of what I could do to myself for the horrible sentence of keeping you confined for ten minutes.
